home share not sharing

Are you logged in to the same Apple ID on both machines?

Are both machines on the same network?

Logout of home sharing (turn it off) & then log back in to see if it alters how it behaves.

I have the same problem of non-sharing between my G5 and new IMac. G5 (10.5.8) has iTunes 10.6.3 and IMac (10.10.5) with iTunes 12.2.2.2b. Could that be my problem?

I doubt iTunes 12 will share with the old iTunes 10.6.3.

Requirements

Home Sharing requires:

• A computer* using the latest version of iTunes

  Download the latest version of iTunes for Mac or Windows.

• Apple ID (iTunes Store account)

  Learn more about Apple ID and get help with your account.

And one or more of the following devices on the same home network:

• Another computer*

  Another computer using the latest version of iTunes. You can use Home sharing with up to 5 computers.

• iOS device

  An iOS device with iOS 4.3 or later

I can't see specific requirements listed for home sharing, take a look through Apples help to see if you can tell how far back it is supported.

Personally I find it sometimes needs both Macs to sign out & rejoin the same Apple ID within home sharing to reactivate it. I would expect it to tell you if it is not supported during the activation setup.

Use Home Sharing to import items from another iTunes library

Unfortunately when I shut the G5 off the shared tunes disappeared off my IMac iTunes library. [I use the G5 it has a CD/DVD reader and the IMac doesn't.]

It sounds like you need to import the shared items if you want to use them on the other Mac. Drag them from the shared list to the Library or to a playlist to import them.

What I finally did was move the music from the G5 to the IMac via a thumb drive. Not quick but works.
