Sep 8, 2015 9:11 AM in response to gerardwby judysings,Hi gerardw,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like the Airport Utility application is launching when it detects an issue with your network. You can change the preferences in the application to stop it from doing that.
On your MacBook Pro, to launch the Airport Utility application, open the Finder application and choose Applications > Utilities > Airport Utility
From the Menu bar in choose Airport Utility > Preferences
Remove the checkmark from "Monitor Airport Base Stations for problems"
Gerard, if this does not resolve your issue, please reply back with any additional information you can provide.

Sep 8, 2015 5:53 PM in response to judysingsby gerardw,Thanks for your help, judysings. I don't think the airport utility app launches because it's detecting some issue with the network, though; whenever it fires up, all lights on the tree are green.
In the end, I ran diskwarrior, and after restarting the Mac a couple of times, everything's back to normal. It's only been a couple of days, though, so I'm knocking on wood.
Thanks again,
-Gerard

Thanks for the update. Sounds like things are running smoothly. If that changes in the future, you may want to just reset the Airport back to factory settings.
