Q: Understanding how it works

From my little experience with ATV I think I know how it works. Am I right? I can view all the movies etc. on the ATV from my computers with little to no problem. I think what I can do with movies, tv shows etc. is download them and either pay for them or rent them, right? The other selections i.e. Netflix, HBO... are independent providers that use ATV. From them I can pay a monthly fee to view movies or content, right? There are also freebees like news, sports that I can view. I hear some wanting to get off the cable box and into this style of watching various content. I just wonder if signing on to multiple providers would cost more than cable. I also hear that Apple may come out with packages that the customer can pick an choose the content they want rather than the cable company picking it. All comments suggestions are welcome.

    Greetings jmsfmtex,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you would like some information and some clarification on Apple TV and its services. It sounds like you are familiar with Home Sharing Movies and TV shows from your computer to the Apple TV, so I won’t cover that information.

You are correct that you can rent or purchase movies directly from your Apple TV to enjoy the content without having to be connected to another device. The attached article below explains this process a little more in depth.

You are also correct, for the most part, about the applications available on the Apple TV. Some of the apps such as Netflix and hulu allow you to either create an account or sign into an existing account to view that content, while others such as Fox Now require login information from your existing cable provider. When you select on the app, the instructions for use of that app will be displayed.

This information for each app can be located in the attached article as well.
