Problem using 2 Graphics Cards in Mac Pro 2012

I hope someone out there has encountered this and has a solution. I have a mid-2012 Mac Pro with 12 cores and running 10.10.4. I have 3 monitors and originally had them all connected to the 3 outputs of the ATI Radeon HD 5770 card that came with the computer. I also have an older Mac Pro (2007) which I no longer use. It had a nVidia 8800GT graphics card that worked perfectly. So, I thought that I could improve the performance of my main display (30" Cinema Display) by not sharing the 5770's resources among 3 monitors. So, I installed the 8800GT and connected the other 2 monitors to it. Here's the problem:

I have to startup the computer with the monitors unplugged from the 8800GT. Then, I can plug them in and they will work perfectly. If I put the computer to sleep, and then wake it, all is OK - all 3 monitors are working. However, if I do a shutdown, and then restart, only the 30" monitor connected to the 5770 turns on. I then have to unplug the other 2 monitors from the 8800GT and plug them back in and then they will work. Even if I power the monitors connected to the 8800GT off, and then turn them on after logging in, they don't work - they have to be physically disconnected and then re-connected. Needless to say, this is a pain - especially since the computer is buried under a desk.

When I look at System Resources, and select "Graphics/Displays", I see both graphics cards listed - even when the monitors connected to the 8800GT are not working. If I select "Displays" from System Preferences, all 3 monitors will be shown - even if the 2 connected to the 8800GT are not working.

Beefing up my GPU CAPABILITIES on my mid 2012 Macpro has become a priority for me. In my real job, I use Photoshop to earn a living and the two ATI 1GB 5770 cards that I purchased with the machine work beautifully for that purpose. However, when I ran my X-plane flight simulator, a one gig GPU didn't give me the kinds of frame rates that I am looking for (X-Plane is not optimized to take advantage of the duel cards).

So based on my reading, I decided on adding a 6 GB Nvidia 980ti to the first X16 PCIe slot (used, from EBay for around $400). In the second X16 slot my plan was to try and run one of the original ATI 5770 cards. Not unexpectedly, here is where the conflict is.

I am running Sierra and Nvidia provides software on its website. So the 980ti runs beautifully by itself and I can either power the middle screen or the middle screen and the two outboard screens as well (I run three monitors ).

I would prefer to run my center screen off the 6GB card only, and insert one of my ATI 5770s and run the two outboard monitors off of that since I don't use those monitors to run the simulator. Except my computer won't power on if both the Nvidia as well as the ATI card are installed in their respective PCI slots. In my reading I've also learned that my Mac Pro does not like that there are cards from two different companies in the same machine even though the software for both exists there. There is plenty of information on how I can power the two cards but I can't get past the fact that the machine won't boot with both cards in place. Although I did read on one of the threads here that someone has achieve this by disconnecting the two outboard monitors during rebooting and then connecting them after boot. But then on restart the conflicts reemerge and the connecting – reconnecting ordeal must be gone through again.

Anyone have any ideas/similar experiences???

Thank you Illaass, but I had already tried those things. I hit post by accident and hadn't finished the whole discussion. Here's some additional information:

1. I originally installed the 8800GT in slot 3 and had the described problem. I then moved it to slot 2 and that made no difference.

2. Slot 1 has the 5770 and, now, slots 3 & 4 have USB3 and eSATA expansion ports.

3. PRAM resets, both with the additional monitors connected, and without them, made no difference.

4. SMC reset made no difference.

From everything I've read, including the system's instructions, it should accommodate 2 graphics cards. Is it possible that they have to be 2 identical cards?

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Illaass:

Thank you. This gets stranger. I tried connecting only 1 monitor to the 8800GT and that works perfectly as long as that monitor is plugged into connector 1 of the 8800GT. Plug that monitor into connector 2, or plug in 2 monitors to the 8800GT and it won't work after restarting. But, with only 1 monitor connected to connector 1, I've tried several restarts and it seems fine. I may try getting a newer card (an additional 5770), but in the meantime, I have a Displaylink adapter and will try to connect the 3rd monitor using that - the third monitor only has text on it. Thanks again for your suggestions.

Best,,,

I believe the difference between the two variants of 8800 GT card would be one being a 32-bit EFI model, and the other a 64-bit EFI model to match the 32/64-bit models of Mac Pro. I thought that the 32-bit card would not work in a 64-bit Mac and vice versa but it maybe that this is more a booting issue i.e. nothing displayed until the booting has finished completely similar to the issue with unmodified PC aka. Windows video cards.

The safest option would be a video card officially compatible with a MacPro 5,1 model e.g. 2010/2012. At the low end this could be a GT 120 or another 5770 as both of these will fit and work in terms of power availability alongside your current 5770. Any more powerful card would result in you exceeding the power capabilities of the internal connectors.

Hi John:

Thank you for your insight. I think you may be right. I had read that the 2nd card might not display until the system had finished booting, but mine didn't work even then when I had 2 monitors connected to it. But, with only 1 monitor connected - and then it must be in connector 1 - it works fine. So, temporarily, I'm using the original 5770 for my 30" Cinema Display; 1 other monitor connected to the old 8800GT and the 3rd to a DisplayLink USB adapter.

Ultimately, I have to get another 5770, but they're hard to find except used and then you never know what you're going to be getting. For what I do, I don't need the latest and greatest video card - I do no 3D or gaming, but I do a lot of high-res photo editing and now some video editing. That's the reason I don't want to share the resources of the existing 5770 among more than just the 30" display. The other displays just have email, calendar, etc., so no big deal. So, in reality, the setup as I have it now is OK. But, it'll be cleaner if I find a good Apple-compatible 5770. Thanks again,

Dan

Since you have the Mac 5770 just get a PC 5770. They are cheap and you can use the Mac card for when you need to see the boot screen like booting to Recovery.

I have a 2009 MP and have both the provided GT 120 and a PC 5770.

You can also get better PC cards that the 5770

Thanks Illaass:

My problem is that the 5770 takes 2 spaces. I have 2 PCIe cards that provide USB3 and SATA ports, and I'd have to remove 1 of those cards to add a 2nd 5770. Since 2 of my monitors are only used for things like email, I don't need a powerful card for those 2 monitors. Perhaps I can find one that's a single slot high, like the old 8800GT, but that's also compatible with the MP 5,1. It doesn't matter if it doesn't come on until the system has booted since I've got the 5770 that does that.

Like you mentioned, there are much more powerful cards than the 5770 and perhaps 1 of them would drive all 3 monitors and be an even better solution than 2 5770s and still allow me to have the extra slots for my other cards. The problem is that they're expensive.

Thanks Grant:

I had 3 monitors, using the correct adapters, connected to the 5770 and got the impression that the card was dividing its resources among the 3 monitors and that was negatively impacting the performance of my main monitor - the 30" Cinema Display - where I do my photo and video work. My assumption was that its performance would improve if the card only had to drive that 1 monitor. I haven't done enough experimentation to determine if this is a true assumption, but I think I'm seeing an improvement, but that could be my imagination. What I need to do is time a few actions with 3 monitors connected, and with only 1, to be sure. Do you know of anyone who has done this kind of test?

Thanks again,

Dan

Hi Illaass:

Thank you, again. I just want to be sure I understand what will happen if I plug a PC card into my MP 5,1. My understanding is that the only drawback is that the monitors connected to it will not come on until after the system has booted, and that after that it will work normally. Is that correct?

Thanks, again

Barefeats, MacVidCards, MacRumors (lots of threads, tests, custom builds).

A GTX 9xx for Adobe apps would be much better. Sometimes apps do better with more VRAM and 1GB is not enough, let alone the 512MB of some cards.

Some people have used Quadro cards too but then those PNY cards were $700+.

There are multiple threads people have tried to answer those questions to reduce repetitively ask/answer every time.
