Well, is it a PowerBook (1991 - 2005) as in the post title, or the MacBook Pro (2006 - present) in your equipment profile? If a PowerBook, what sub-model and what OS is it running?

Did you turn on the projector before turing on the computer? If not, the computer will fail to "see" that its external video port is in use. With many computers regardless of make or OS, you must that the projector not only running but in its "ready" mode before starting the computer. We have an Epson projector at a museum where I volunteer and, when you first turn it on, it is in a startup mode indicated by a flashing light on the projector. When ready for use, the flashing light will glow steady and that is when you should turn on the computer.
