Can't edit year in iTunes

I hoped 7.01 or 7.02 would fix this, but it hasn't. I want to enter a year for songs I have ripped myself (before I even owned a Mac). I am no longer able, since about 7.0, to enter a year when a song is lacking it, or to correct a wrong year. The field seems to be completely ineditable. Do I have an option, other than using my trusty old mp3 tag editor, to do this?

Intel iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can't edit the year when viewing the library or playlist, but you should be able to do that when you Get Info (Command-I) of a song or multiple songs.
When Getting Info of a single song, click the Info tab.
When selecting multiple songs and Getting Info, the year is editable at the top right of the 'Multiple Item Information' window.
