First go to Settings > General > and look under "USE SIDE SWITCH TO:" If it is set to Mute, then check your side switch to make sure it did not get muted accidentally (you should not see the red dot). If it is set to Lock Rotation then bring the Control Center up by swiping up from the bottom of the home screen and make sure Mute is not ON.
Use Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
If this does not work for you, try a forced restart. Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it comes up. You will not lose anything.
Post back if none of this works as there are other steps that can be taken but these are the most common and easiest.

Sep 10, 2015 6:23 PM in response to elcpuby Chicago79,Thank you for your assistance I followed the instructions, checking mute under settings and the control center. I did the forced restart and the sound was restored- but only temporarily. When I changed from one app to another it stopped working. I again checked settings and control center- no change- and performed another hard stop which did not restore the sound. Any additional advice?

Sep 10, 2015 6:31 PM in response to Chicago79by elcpu,Hmmm, it could be a hardware issue or a corrupted iOS. I would try to resolve a potential iOS issue first. Try a full Restore:
Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
To correct a possibly corrupted iOS or App perform a full Reset as described in the article above. Please make sure to follow the directions as shown, specifically to backup the phone to iTunes first as described in the article. This process will take you about 30-50 minutes.
