replacing battery for MacBook Pro 2009, where to purchase and how to install?

I'd like to replace the battery in my 2009 MacBook Pro before passing it on. How do I identify which battery to purchase? Where to purchase? And can I install it myself or do I need to go through the Apple store (with all the delays involved in that process)?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2009)

Apple battery replacement service for iOS devices and notebooks - http://www.apple.com/batteries/replacements.html

Maybe you can get them from other sources. I don't know, have you done a web search? A 2009 MBP is no longer under warranty so no concerns there, and if it is anything like my 2008 MacBook removing the battery is simply a matter of lifting a lever.

Check out iFixit.com. Do a search for your MBP model and the page will have a link to buy a replacement quality battery. It will also have a list of tools you need and you can buy them on the site along with the battery. There will also be instructions on how to replace the battery.

I had to remove my battery as part of upgrading RAM so I know it was simple.

I have too many browser tabs open at the moment so I will let you do the web search. It would not surprise me if there were third party sources for batteries. I don't know if mac-sales.com a.k.a. OWC has a UK outlet but they tend to be a good place for that sort of thing in the USA. The only thing is if you use a third party battery and should ever want Apple to look at the computer they may refuse, but if I recall correctly a 2009 may be outside the time frame (6 years) where they would even consider looking at your computer for a true repair.

There are third party sources for batteries. It wasn't clear which was the appropriate battery and it looks like the id process on the iFixit.com website was very specific (and therefore I hope accurate). Will find out once we've ordered the battery.

Just need to see about ease of ordering from a European source rather than from the US as that would take a while.

Will also check OWC, thanks
