Q: Time Machine

I don't see my photos or music listed as files in my Time Machine backups, are they included in the back ups of the iPhoto and iTunes applications?

Time Machine, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

They'll be in the Music and Pictures folders of your home folder in the backup, unless they were moved to a different location; if the working copies are on an external drive, that drive needs to be included in the backup. They won't be inside the applications themselves.

If you backed up everything  by Time Machine then the music and photos are included.

For iPhotos they are backed up as part of your iPhotos library and are not viewable unless you restore them.

You should be able to find music in your iTunes media library. The location of the library is specified in iTunes>Preferences>Advanced.

What i see in my Time Machine backup is

    Favorites

         All My Files

         iCloud Drive

         Airdrop

         Applications

         Desktop

         Documents

         Downloads

When I open the All My Files folder I do not see my Photos that are in iPhoto or any of my music files that are in iTunes. I do not see a Home folder or Music or Pictures folder anywhere in the backup. If my iPhotos and iTunes music are backed up I would not know how to restore them as I can't see them anywhere in the backup.

In the Applications folder I can see iTunes (319.3 MB) and iPhoto (65.9 MB) but i suspect that is just the application software.

All of my data is on my Mac drive not on an external drive and I have not excluded anything from the Time Machine backup.

Instead of looking in the Favorites, go to the Applications folder directly, navigate up one level, open Users, then the folder with your name.

When I open the Time Machine backup I see" WD MyCloud" which is the folder on the external drive I am backing up to. When I navigate to Favourites/Applications I see all my application icons. When I go back one level "<" it takes me back to the "WD MyCloud" folder.

Navigate to your working copies of those folders in the Finder and then choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu.

Ok, I go to Finder, open the Application Folder and start the Photo application and I see all my pictures. I go to the Time Machine menu and select EnterTime Machine. Next I see the Applications folder for my Time Machine backup on the external drive which as I understand it is only the application software not the data. When I select the Photos application it gives me information about the application which is 50.4 MB. Same thing happens with iTunes, open the application with finder and see all my music albums, enter Time Machine and see the backup Applications Folder click on iTunes and get information about the software (319.3 MB)

In the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu instead of going to the Applications folder.

Choose Go to Folder and provide ~ as the path. You need to be in the Finder and outside of Time Machine when doing this; when done, go into Time Machine as described above.

Yes I saw your reply. I have no problem finding my music on my Mac mini. What I am trying to verify is that my music and my photos have been backed up with my Time Machine backup on my external drive.

Okay I finally figured it out. When I Enter Time Machine I select the "Device" name I gave my Mac Mini when I set it up (the default is probably Home) it then shows the high level folder "Macintosh HD" which I can drill down through "Users" and finally see that my Photos have been backed up as a library and my music files by folder.

    Thanks for the help
