Does using Apple Maps as Sat Nav, consume data?

I am currently using a 3rd party Sat Nav app called Co-Pilot. I want to know if I switched to Apple Map in iOS, would I be likely to use up my mobile providers allowance of 500MB to any great extent? Would it be possible to use without WiFi or cellular input?

Unfortunately, it will use data. My guess is that it needs to download the maps as you're using them. I have no clue how much data is actually used. My wife and I share 1G of data. She navigates with the Maps app but I use a standalone Garmin device. So far, we've been nowhere near our data allotment. In five months, the highest we've used is 0.25G (250MB).

By the way, if you have Verizon, it's worth looking into their recently announced plans. You will probably be able to switch to 1G with the same monthly cost that you're paying now!

About plus/minus 1MB per hour, however Satellite view will absolutely suck data. Also has an offline mode...you can download quite a large area over WiFi & then use this cache to navigate. Offline mode is done automatically...while connected to WiFi, zoom to street view of the area you want to navigate, start turn-by-turn...while still connected to WiFi...once you leave WiFi, you'll be surprised at the large area that's cached.

If you download the maps via wifi before your trip you will not incur any data charges while using Co-Pilot. All maps will be stored on the device, unlike Google or Apple maps. Currently the North America maps takes up about 1.3GB of space on the iPhone. Stick with Co-Pilot. It is a dedicated nav app and I have found it to be more accurate than Google maps and Apple Maps.
