Apple Upgrade Program vs T-Mobile Jump

Hello there! I'm Dewan. I'm currently a proud owner of an iPhone 6 Plus (16GB unfortunately, need way more space) on T-Mobile. I was pretty happy to hear that Apple started their own upgrade program where you can get a new iPhone every year for a month fee. The thing is... I have T-Mobile Jump which also let's me upgrade phones every year. I also get insurance from that just like AppleCare. Also when you buy a new iPhone, you get 1 year of warranty anyways through Apple so what would be the point of the upgrade program other then you get accident coverage? I also notice that if you pay $32/month with Apple Upgrade Program then you're technically paying $384 every year for your iPhone compared to T-Mobile full price charge of $700 or whatever. I also thought about how this is just the upgrade program fee and not counting a phone plan. So if you're phone bill is $80 a month then you're adding an extra $32 a month to that bill every month. I already pay $80 a month for iPhone 6 Plus with unlimited data, calling etc. The phone is also on a payment plan with T-Mobile.

So what you think is more worth it? Did I miss anything? Let me know.

Thanks,

Dewan Payroda

I think the iPhone Upgrade Program is the better option, as long as you have already paid the full cost of your current device and will be starting from zero. It all comes down to the actual device you choose, plus the combined monthly cost of the EIP and the Jump fee.

In my case, I have the 64 GB iPhone 6, which was listed at $750 upon release. Over 12 months, the total cost of EIP payments ($375) plus Jump charges ($120) adds up to $495. In comparison, at the monthly rate of $36.58, I would end up paying Apple $439 over 12 months. So in the end, T-Mobile is getting an extra $56 from me.

However, I have decided to stick with Jump. I definitely don't want to spend another $375 to have a clean slate and go through the potential hassle of trying to sell my old phone to get some of my investment back. I have also considered the fact that T-Mobile has more locations near my house and that insurance is still included in their Jump program.

I hope this helps put things in perspective for you. Good luck with your final decision.

I am unsure the above Comment is completely accurate. I just finished signing up with T-Mobile having compared with Apple and T-Mobile upgrade plans.

There is no separate EIP and Jump on demand cost. There is just one i.e 20 USD for Basic Model and 99 dollars for a 64 GB DP plus 24 Dollars (EIP and Jump On Demand Included) + 8 $'s for the Insurance PM, making it 32 $'s PM and I can swap out my phone upto 3 times a year.

I too initially thought that the jump on demand (20$'s ) was extra. however, it was not. It was included in the 20 $'s for the basic phone.

I would suggest visit Apple store then visit T-Mobile store and the compare Apples to Apples (he he)

They said this was a promotion hence the pricing.

Cheers!

I'm curious about this too.

One thing that has to be cleared up is... yes $384 every year, but remember you have to trade-in your phone. With that said, is a year old iPhone worth $316 ($700-$384)? I guess it's a question if you need to upgrade every year or if you can wait every two years or more.

I'm already paying $27 installment for a iPhone 6 (16 GB too :-P )

Personally, the more I think about it... I'm going to pass on it. I have a great phone already and I can wait another year or two.
