Sudo nano private/etc/hosts terminal shows empty file?

I need to adjust my hosts file and normally i would be able to do that threw my terminal with the command:

sudo nano private/etc/hosts

It worked couple days ago, but now when i type the command now it shows a empty file while the file when you search for it in the finder isn't empty.

Does someone know how to get the function back so i can easily edit the hosts file with terminal or maybe is there a other way?
