Convert wav files into aiff and re-allocate to Playlists

Hi all,

MAybe someone can help me here. I have about 2000 wav files and would like to convert them to aiff files (because aiff saves all id3 tags into file and also ads the covers. covers are very helpful intraktor dj). These 2000 files are spread over about 50 playlists. just converting the normal way just makes 2000 new files, which then have to be re-allocated to each individual playlist and then all old wav files have to be deleted... Not to mention loosing all cue points and grids in Traktor Pro and Traktor Dj.

does anyone know how to do convert them in such a way that itunes re-allocates the new aiff file to the already existing path in the library and substitutes the new file for the old wav and deletes the old wav files also?

or do you have any other suggestions which are faster then the one-by-one method?

THanks for your time

Hi Beat Pirate -- a couple of thoughts:

You might browse through the vast collection at Doug's Applescripts for iTunes -- http://dougscripts.com/itunes/index.php -- to see if there's a script there that might automate, or at least simplify, some of this process.

One way to make the process more efficient might be to process the playlists one at a time:

• Select all the songs in List A, then Control-click and Create AIFF Version.

• Select all the songs again and Delete, thus clearing List A.

• Go to the Recently Added playlist (or set your main library to sort by Date Added), select the whole batch of recently created AIFF files, and drag them into List A.

Only now that I think about it, I'm guessing some tracks appear in more than one list. So it would be necessary to add another wrinkle as you go along. I'll have to give some thought to what that wrinkle might be. Meantime maybe salvation is to be found at Doug's site.

You can metatag the songs in your current playlists with the playlist name very easily (just use existing field like "grouping").

Then, create a smartlist that selects for that playlist name and AIFF file type.

Now, when you convert the file to AIFF format, they will automatically appear in the new smart playlist.

Hope this helps!

If you're looking for a more radical approach: I've rather given up on managing large numbers of files and playlists in iTunes, and switched to an external (PC) application called Foobar (a GNU project). That also enables me to use FLAC, OGG, etc. formats, and to freely convert to AAC, ALAC, AIFF, etc.

Basically, I metatag songs in Foobar with a Playlist name, export to the iTunes directory structure, then rescan the iTunes directory structure in its entirety or selectively depending on what I'm doing. I use a smart list to pull in songs tagged with each different Playlist name, so I'd no further effort to rebuild the playlist.

hi MjlDay,

thanks for the input, it is an idea I hanven't used (the grouping and then smartlist). Unfortunately for this problem, the 50 playlists are full of aiff and wav (i used to buy wav and convert cds to wav before aiff came out) and some mp3 all mixed up. And also many tracks show up in various playlists, for example one track could be in a mix playlist as well as in the groove Tech playlist.

best wishes
