I called Cricket wireless about switching my sprint iphone 5C to their network. The suggested that I take my phone into an apple store. But if I can find an answer here and save a trip to the mall, I'd much prefer it.

I'm surprised they don't have something there that you can plug in your phone's IMEI and they can immediately tell you if that phone will work on their network. Maybe you should go with another carrier? You can do this at Ting.com - and I already know they take Sprint phones.
