Why is my iPhone battery dying so fast?

I bought an unopened iPhone 4S, because I prefer the smaller phones, and the battery is draining in less than 5 hours. It is still running iOS 6, because I prefer iOS 6, so it's not like a newer iOS is the problem. Is it the age of the battery? My old 4S ran great for years until it got water damage. But I'm 92.3% sure I had the battery replaced once. Not completely sure, though. I have an unopened replacement battery, so I am going to get that put in. But isn't that battery itself really old? Or will it work? Is the fact that the battery was sitting in the phone for a few years the reason it's dying so fast, and a battery that hasn't been in any device going to work better?

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again

If this does not help, setting it up as new device would be the next step:

How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups

Maybe also take a look at this page about battery drainage

If still no luck, get your phone checked by visiting an Authorized Apple Service Provider or Apple Store next to your place.

You can also contact Apple Support and talk to them. They can check the battery online.

You can also visit this page to do that: iPhone - Contact Support - Apple Support

Click on Apple Support, then on ->Battery, Power &Charging ->Battery questions and troubleshooting, and follow the instructions.
