wrong year!

I've just imported all my photos into iPhoto and sure enough, its really cool. Well what what did I expect? I hear you say...

However, it seems to think that a significant number of the photos I took in 2003 were taken in 1970. The EXIF data for these seems to be correct, as viewed in iPhoto and other applications, so what is going wrong? These are not the first pictures I took, I have digitally aquired images going back to 2001. Some of them are taken with other people's cameras and a few did have EXIF dates of 1970. Correcting that worked, but most, as I say, have correct EXIF dates.

I wouldn't care, but it puts my photos in the wrong order and with 8191 to look through, that's a bit of a nuscence.

Can I move the photos in the "1970" folder in "originals" to the "2003" one, and then trash and rebuild some database file? If not and I have to trash the lot and rebuild from the original files, what modifications should I make to ensure it doesn't happen again?

Some other points:
1. I unchecked "copy files to iPhoto library folder" because I just don't have that much hard disk space at the moment. Also, I like the way I've organised them which is:
2. Into folders with a CDs worth on each one - convenient for backup. Each CD folder has 10-15 subfolders with dates as names. A few of these have subfolders but not many.

Could any of that have made a difference?

No don't do that! It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder (or in your own file structure once the pics have been imported into iPhoto) as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.

You can, however, go to roll view and drag photos from roll to roll in the iPhoto Window. The key to remember is that iPhoto is a database, and all the manipulation of data should be done via the iPhoto Window.

At a guess, and because of the year, I'd say the reason some of the photos are turning up from 1970 is because at some point they spent time on a machine where the date settings were lost. When that happens with a UNIX based machine, the date reverts to 1970.

Choosing to use your own file structure - or the arrangement of it - should not have caused this issue.
