Q: I get encoding error when used with Yosemite but not with Snow Leopard on older computer

I use iDVD when I burn a FinalCut Pro mov file that contains chapters. iDVD works fine on old computer, but not on latest iMac with 10.10.5 Yosemite  Both computers use version 7.1.2 iDVD.

iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

My experience with 10.10.5 is that iDVD repeatably will have encoding failure when I try to create a disk image with a movie that does not include an audio track.  Adding an audio track using FCP X, even muted, lets the encoding proceed properly.

Curious as to whether the mov file you are working with has an audio track?

The old home movie .mov, has no audio.

I placed a short .mov video that has audio, into iDVD. I was able to create a disk image.

Hey glad to hear that - I was pretty much convinced the audio was the issue and your experience does seem to confirm that.

The one I was working on, had a silent home movie Plus slide show, using Majic iDVD. The slide show has music

Yeah, when I first ran into the issue I also had one movie with audio and a slideshow made in Aperture with no audio and that failed encoding.  I first blamed Aperture but that was not the case.  When I added a music track to the slideshow encoding was successful.

Says to me that all movies you now have in one DVD project have to have audio.

And that's only with 10.10.5.  Earlier versions of Yosemite didn't exhibit that problem, including 10.10.4 and previous.

Hope they fix that in the next Mac OS X release.

I think there is something wrong with the system.

last month, I created an old (1945) home movie iDVD video for  a cousen, with no problem. Last week I tried to creat another from the same dvdproj file. It still had no audio, but getting encoding error.

I certainly agree that there is some problem in 10.10.5.  After all, iDVD hasn't changed/

Did you upgrade to 10.10.5 between the previous project that worked and now doesn't?  (Or changed computers?) Like I said, 10.10.4 and earlier work for me.

Last month, the hard drive name suddenly changed from Macintosh Hard Drive to two lines of **********. The name could not be changed!

I took it to the Apple Store for repair.

The tech was very knowledgable, but it took about an hour to correct the problem. He finally hooked up a laptop to my iMac,  and transferred its system to my iMac. I was told that having encryption on, most likely caused the problem.

I think the problem with iDVD started after that.

Is adding one short audio track to the video sufficiant, or do I have to completely fill the track?

Problem solved, thanks to the post by stumbleone!

I went back to FCPX and added a short, silent  audio clip to the silent home movie. I exported it as a Quicktime file with chapters selected.

Using iDVD, I selected Magic iDVD, selected the theme and dropped in the video. it burned DVD with no errors.
