I would max out the memory to 16 GB and replace the rotating HD with an SSD. Then it should be fine.
However, I would check to see if your model is covered by this recall

Sep 11, 2015 3:38 PM in response to tracitcby rocjtothe,i have an older mac too and it couldn't be upgraded unless i installed snow leopard, which i can't do without the disc. waiting for it in the mail but all my research and the guy at the store said it would work...
