How to read downloaded ePubs in iBooks

Using new MacBook with Yosemite 10.10.3. Newbie to iBooks question.

I downloaded an ePub (file extension acsm) from our local public library. It is in Downloads. How do I read it in iBooks?

I have tried iBooks >> File >> Add to Library pointing at Downloads. The book is present, but can not be selected to "Add to Library".

Thanks for your help.

iBooks can't read such stuff. If you consult the info provided by your library about how to read their ebooks, it should tell you what you need to do for a Mac, which is probably to download Adobe Digital Editions or another app which can handle it.
