Q: problems syncing my entire library with iCloud Photo Library

All of my photos appear to be in iCloud, but my mac still says it is uploading items, and has been doing so for over a month.  Recent photos I have taken on my iPhone appear on my iPad but not on my mac.  How long will this take to finish?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

but my mac still says it is uploading items

If your Mac is giving the message "uploading items" and not videos or photos, it is trying to upload something else, probably files that are incompatible with icloud.  Do you have audio files or files created by a graphics editor in your Photos Library? In iPhoto you could have added files in a format, that is not supported in Photos. If such files have been migrated from iPhoto to Photos, they may now be blocking the upload.

Thank you, that is interesting, but 31.372 items?  I certainly don't have that many (if any) files that are not photos.  How would I check?

Are you seeing that message about items in the Photos > Preferences > iCloud panel or at the bottom of the Photos window, when you select the "Moments" view?

    My "Moments" are showing currently:

If I import an Audio file, it will show + 1 item.

The Preferences panel on the other hand will only show "items" while it is syncing.

Check the item count at the bottom of the "Moments" view.  How many items are listed there?

Audio files will look like this in your library:

To search for such items search for the file name extension with a smart album with the rule "text includes".

    My 'moments' is currently showing:

    20.711 photos, 115 videos, adding 15,543 items

The preference panel  shows Adding 15,543 items

I do not have any files which look like your above image in my library

    >re the numbers decreasing, albeit slowly? Or is it hanging at exactly the same numbers for days?

You could compare the photos and videos in your library to what you are seeing at www.icloud.com in the Photos.app.

Compare the missing files to what is in your library and try to find out, if there is anything special about those files.

it don't necessarily need to be audio files, it couls also be photos that have been edited in an external editor, that changed the format of the photos to a propriatary format.

Thanks again leonie, It appears to be stuck at a point in time.  I did find a few unexpected files at that point, which I deleted hoping that would 'unstick' things, and have been through all the files waiting to upload, but there is nothing left other than photos I have taken.  I have also tried pausing, restarting photos & rebooting computer.
