On my Macbook pro from mid 2012 now running Yosemite, I tried both "D" and "option + D" for AHT, but both lead me to internet recovery....

Read this to see how to get into and use Recovery Mode. If you're trying to run the Hardware Test, are you booting up from a cold start?
Also, based on this, AHT may not be available on your Mac and the connection may be to the internet version.
