Have a MBP Mid 2010. Do not have original disks. I would like to wipe the device before I give it to a granddaughter. Please let me know what I should do. I presume I could erase the HD with Disk Utility...and I don't know if that affects the OS.

You need the original disks; click here, phone Apple, and order replacements. A retail Snow Leopard DVD won't work on that Mac.
The copy of the Disk Utility on the active startup disk cannot be used to erase it.

If so update the EFI so that the original disks are not required. Also some users have reported that if you did update the EFI you can't boot from the original disks and install that earlier OSX version
