Hi Nicki

Nightstand mode is a new optional feature for Apple Watch that is included within an upcoming software update ("watchOS 2"). The update is due for release on 16 September.

Preview information is available here: http://www.apple.com/watchos-2/

In order to upgrade your watch (via the Apple Watch app on iPhone > My Watch > General > Software Update), you will first need to upgrade your iPhone to iOS 9, which is released the same day.

After the software update has been released and installed, this is how Nightstand mode can complement overnight charging:

"Now you can use your watch even when you’re done wearing it for the day. Just place it on its side and connect the charger. Apple Watch will automatically go into Nightstand mode, a digital display that illuminates whenever you touch the screen, the Digital Crown, or the side button. Nightstand mode even changes how the watch buttons function. When an alarm sounds, you press the side button to turn it off, or the Digital Crown to snooze."
