My brother gave me a mac and i've never used one before and I'm trying to figure out what program to use that is similiar to microsoft word or is there a free program? Thank you

Not only is there Microsoft Office for Mac, Office 365 is not expensive AND Office Online is free at office.com. Libre Office, Abi Word, Google Docs, ZOHO Office....just Google Free Mac Word.
I would disagree that Office 365 is inexpensive. In fact since you cannot buy it outright but effectively rent it annually, it is expensive indeed in the longer run. If you are looking for inexpensive one-off purchase of Word for Mac, go for the 2011 version rather than the 2015, the 2011 has the full functionality you need. Search "Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac" on eBay and you should get the download required.
