Is power light on steady?
Are any diagnostic light lit on the logic board or by the memory sticks?
Can you boot to boot manager screen? Yo do that by depress and holding the Option key during bootup.
Try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

Sep 14, 2015 9:33 AM in response to lllaassby Markysburke,Hi many thanks for your response - I hear the chimes but I can not see any power lights on (not sure where they would be). I can not see any diagnostic lights. I can not boot to any screen except the grey/white one. I can not boot to recovery either. I will try SMC/NVRAM reboot but I believe I have already tried it. Not sure what to do next.
Thanks
