Installing OS 9 on iBook G3 1st generation

I just got a New (old) iBook G3 1st generation and it has a copy of OS 8 on it. I am familiar with OS X as I use it all the time, and I know that you can install a fresh copy of OS X on any Mac without "driver" support. Is OS 9 and my old iBook the same way? Can I use an old copy of OS 9 and just restart the computer and not worry about anything else?
