iMac Retina - BootCamp - Windows 10 - Partition Problem

Hello.

This is my iMac:

iMac Retina 5K 27 Inch

Processor: 4Ghz Intel Core i7

Memory 8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
OSX Yosemite Version 10.10.5

As of writing, all updates installed from the App Store

This is my problem:

- Want to install Windows 10 via Bootcamp

- Downloaded the latest Windows 10 64Bit iso

- Used Bootcamp assistant to put the iso on a USB stick and create a new HD partition of 500GB called BOOTCAMP

- Bootcamp assistant restarts my Mac, I'm taken to Windows 10 setup, go through the various menus fine until I get to the partition selection menu

- Can't use the new BOOTCAMP partition, given the error message: 'Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 4'

- So I click the Format option for that partition, and it is formatted

- I try to install on this formatted partition, and I now get the error message: 'We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see the setup log files'.

Things I have tried to solve the problem:

- I made sure the USB stick with the Win 10 installer was the only external drive connected to my iMac. I have a mouse and 2nd monitor connected through USB, but I can't imagine they'd be a problem

- Tried to bypass Bootcamp assistant and manually install Windows 10 using Disk Utility and creating a partition formatted to Windows NT File System - but that ran into the same partition problems.

- Held the Option button on restart and booted up from EFI Boot - same problems occurred

Please Help!

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Can you post the output of the following OSX Terminal commands?

diskutil list

diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

Bootcamp partitioning failed miserably.

EFI boot requires MSR (System Reserved - FAT) and MSD (Data - NTFS). BCA did not choose this path.

Legacy BIOS boot requires, MBR and a partition within the first 2TB start point, otherwise it will fail.

BCA did not do it correctly. Can you remove the BC Partition using BCA only? Once it is removed,

1. Run Disk Utility Repair Disk.

2. Run the following two procedures.

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

3. Run BCA and once the partitioning is complete see if it works. If it does not, please post the output of the same commands, and we can figure what manual intervention should be made to make BCA work correctly.

The steps you wrote worked! I'm writing this from Windows 10. I wouldn't have thought that pulling out the power cable and plugging it back in again would have helped in getting me here, but it did.
I Reset SMC and NVRAM, ran BCA again, and had no problem with partitions after formatting through Windows setup.
Thank you so much for your help!

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue as above, but your remediation steps didn't work for me. The error I get from the Windows 10 installation is (from X:\Windows\panther\ log):

IBSLIB CanBeSystemVolume: Volume at disk [0] offset [0x676c200000] doesn't meet criteria for system volumes...

ISBLIB DiskRegionSupportCapability:Region on disk [0] (offset [0x676c200000]) is BLOCKED against capability [CanBeSystemVolume] for the following reasons...

ISBLIB LogReasons: [BLOCKING reason for {disk 0 offset 0x676c200000}: CanBeSystemVolume] The selected disk space is not of type ESP.

I've followed the instructions as per the original poster 4-5 times with no luck. Any help from the experts here would be much appreciated.

My setup (with the BOOTCAMP partition created) is:

disk3, disk4 & disk5 are a software raid array of 2 USB3 disks.

No. You have a different issue. Please see Boot Camp doesn't support RAID configurations - Apple Support .

Eject disk3/4 RAID, disk5 MyBook. You need to use only the internal disk0 and the USB Installer for the entire duration of the Windows installation. What year/model is your Mac?
