Q: iMac Retina - BootCamp - Windows 10 - Partition Problem

Hello.

This is my iMac:

iMac Retina 5K 27 Inch

Processor: 4Ghz Intel Core i7

Memory 8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
OSX Yosemite Version 10.10.5

As of writing, all updates installed from the App Store

This is my problem:

- Want to install Windows 10 via Bootcamp

- Downloaded the latest Windows 10 64Bit iso

- Used Bootcamp assistant to put the iso on a USB stick and create a new HD partition of 500GB called BOOTCAMP

- Bootcamp assistant restarts my Mac, I'm taken to Windows 10 setup, go through the various menus fine until I get to the partition selection menu

- Can't use the new BOOTCAMP partition, given the error message: 'Windows cannot be installed to Disk 0 Partition 4'

- So I click the Format option for that partition, and it is formatted

- I try to install on this formatted partition, and I now get the error message: 'We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information see the setup log files'.

Things I have tried to solve the problem:

- I made sure the USB stick with the Win 10 installer was the only external drive connected to my iMac. I have a mouse and 2nd monitor connected through USB, but I can't imagine they'd be a problem

- Tried to bypass Bootcamp assistant and manually install Windows 10 using Disk Utility and creating a partition formatted to Windows NT File System - but that ran into the same partition problems.

- Held the Option button on restart and booted up from EFI Boot - same problems occurred

Please Help!

Please ensure you have good backups of OSX  and Windows.

    Thanks,

The RAID setup I unplugged is my backup for OSX. No need to backup Windows 10, it's only installed so I can run XBox remote streaming!

    Hi Loner T,

I have been following this post for the past few days. trying to be able to play Overwatch which i hear good things about.

My iMac is too a 5K iMac with a 256GB SSD Internal.

The identical errors for me occur at the Windows installation on the "failure" to install to the selected partition after formatting in windows setup.

So far my problem looks very similar to supastring original post.

    With errors identical.

So looking at the SMC/NVRAM reset after restoring the BC still did not produce a successful result.

I went a step further and tried to delete the partition within windows setup. Only to creating g a mess of things and having to Restore my iMac entirely.

Before i venture any further or give up. i wish to see if there was any better guidance for me to try.

I have progressed to the point of installation

    After primarily.

1: Removing all drives except the USB and the Internal

    2: SMC/NVRAM Reset

    Error:

Occurs at the windows installation Failing at some 60% of the "getting files ready for installation"

    Saying:

"Windows cannot install required files: The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error Code:0x80070570"

I'm pretty stumped. Im using the direct ISO from the MS site.

    After 3 days I'm successful.

Not sure what exactly played the crucial step.

But i consistently trail and error trudged through the NVRAM resets.

The most notable progress i made was with removing all HDD's except the EFI USB.

and secondly I retried the installation USB creation separately (without making the BC Partition first)

Then moved on to standard installation and it would fail.

What Worked for me is I ended up having to use a ISO for Windows Pro instead of Home x64 that i found on a torrent site for a clean ISO circa 2015.

Something in the 2016 ISO from Microsoft wasn't playing nice on my system.

Adding this for archival information incase someone loses a few days tearing their hair out.

Please remember to backup OSX, Windows and create a Windows System Restore point.

I was having the same problem but I had an external HDD attached while doing the Bootcamp.

I disconnected the external HDD and the Bootcamp setup worked well and I could see the partition and install Win10.

Perhaps this may help someone out there.

    Good luck o all.

This didn't solve the problem for me.

In the end, removing all attached USB drives seemed to be the solution for me.

I looked at the X:\Windows\panther\setupact.log. (Simply use "notepad setupact.log".) I read the log in that way that the installer didn't look at any partition beyond partition 4 on disk 0, but instead looked at the first four partitions of all connected USB drives and couldn't find a suitable partition for Windows among those, of course.

    Summary:

If you have any USB drives connected, try to disconnect them first before trying anything more fancy.
