How to print pdf without background

My teacher sends us the notes after lecture in pdf format but he sends them all with a black background. Is there anyway I can get rid of the black background and just make it white so I don't waste ink when I print them?

Thanks!

Are you familiar with Automator? You can make a simple 'application' that can extract the text in PDF's that have 'actual text' - Some PDF's may have images that display as text - that cannot be extracted so be sure to check your files work & don't delete the originals, it really depends on the format the teacher creates.

Open /Applications/Automator, create a new document, make it an 'Application'.

Find this next item in the 'Library' (use the search field) & drag it to the side that says 'Drag actions or files here to build your workflow'.

Add 'Extract PDF text', set the desired option, Rich text will include some of the styling, or use plain text.

Eventually it should look like this…

User uploaded file

Note: image from 10.9.

Save this as application as 'PDF to Text' on your Desktop. Drag any PDF's onto & it will create a TextEdit document for reading.

There are other potential options in Automator, such as the 'Quartz filters', which may be able to make the PDF black & white & if you tweak the brightness it may be more legible.

You can also make a 'Service' instead of an Application that can run on a right click in certain menus or from the 'Application Name > Service' menu, Automator gives you a lot of power if you take a few minutes to plug things together.
