Q: Does Target Display Mode / Target disk mode work if you connect a thunderbolt to an mini-display port iMac?

I know some models support target display mode over thunderbolt and others over mini-display port. What if I connect a newer iMac using thunderbolt to an older one using mini-displayport? Shall that work using a thunderbolt or mini display port cable?
