I have an old ipod touch 5th generation and I want to receive any free updates that are being offered for this device. What steps must I take?

The simple way is to go to Settings > General > Software Update periodically to see if there are updates at that point, and also just to watch your App Store app to see if it indicates any updates to apps you have installed.
