Q: Printing Airport Extreme

Hi everyone,

I am planning to buy an airport extreme router soon. I wanted to know if its compatible with the HP Deskjet 1010 USB Printer.

I had to install a driver on my MBA yosemite for the printer to work properly via usb and therefore I am wondering if the wireless printing won't be an issue with my iPhones (5s & 6 Plus), iPad mini and macbook air.

Did anyone try to hook up the HP deskjet 1010 to their extreme routers?

Any advice would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!!

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

It's not so much a question of the Airport as the drivers on the devices. If you can plug your printer directly into your Mac and print, then you can plug it into the USB port on the Airport and it will print - you will need to set it up as a new printer, but it will work OK and you will still have the setting to use it if connected directly. I have an elderly HP which works fine this way, though there are no HP drivers available for it now and I have to use the generic Gutenprint one which is less satisfactory.

I can't answer for the iOS devices, though.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I guess I shall have to give it a try for the ios devices.

    I hope it works!

    Cheers!

Ask in the iPad or iPhone forum about printing from these devices - someone's bound to have it working.

The HP Deskjet 1010 is not an AirPrint compatible printer so will not print natively from your iOS devices. Check for AirPrint compatible printers here: About AirPrint - Apple Support

You may still have two possibilities to print from iOS devices that support AirPrint.

    1) If you have a computer running all the time, you can use a software AirPrint service like Printopia (https://www.decisivetactics.com/products/printopia/). Printopia shares the printers installed on your computer to your iOS devices using the AirPrint protocols.

    2) Do a search in the App store because HP may also have an app that will allow you to print from it directly. They have a couple, but I do not know for sure if the Deskjet 1010 is supported.

    Hi Alfred,

Thanks for your reply! I'll go for that application. At first I thought that any printer connected to the extreme would automatically become an airprint printer. Thanks for the clarification.

    Cheers!
