Hello, I am trying to change the name of a folder in my finder tab under favorites. I tried the 'get info' tab but it will not let me change it. I looked through my system preferences and could not find the folder.

Thanks for trying to help but that will not work on my macbook pro. From FINDER in my FAVORITES there are 6 items listed (i.e. dropbox, all my files, applications, etc) and I want to change the name of one of them (basically one I named when I set up the computer). Underneath these items is the DEVICES area.
I am thinking I asked the wrong question initially calling it a folder.

Yes, but it's still sort of a folder. Control-click (right-click) on the folder and choose Rename. It must be a folder you have permission to change the name (like one you created inside your Home folder or one of the subfolders).
Thanks for trying Barney but it won't work for me. It is not a big deal to change the name of the folder but it drives me nuts that i cannot do it.
Basically I am going from FINDER to DEVICES to MY APPLE folder to MACINTOSH HD to USERS to MY APPLE folder. I am trying to change the folder called MY APPLE.
I have clicked the lock giving me permission to make changes but it is still "greyed out".
What am i doing wrong?

So, we weren't talking about the Sidebar after all?
How was that folder created?
If you cannot rename it, then you don't have permissions to do so.
In the Sharing section of Get Info, what is entered there?

Thanks to the previews replys i have an idea : The Finder sidebar folders are just shortcuts of the original folder. Maybe if you deleted the shortcut first then it will let you change the name of the Original folder and then create a fresh shortcut.

sounds like you are trying to rename an item in the sidebar, which i think you cannot do.
you should identify this folder in the folder structure of your mac, and then once identified you should be able to change its name.
if you are still having problems changing the name, do you have enough permissions to do so, are you logged in as an administrator.
can you post some screenshots so we have an idea of where this folder is on your mac.
Of course the folder names in the sidebar are just aliases. Everybody knows that.
You can drag them in and out.
Some folders are "system" folders and you can not easily rename them like you can the user folders.
The System Disk is an exception: you can rename that one in the sidebar.
Click on the name of the folder in the finder to select it then press the Return key. You can then type in the new name the name. Click away from the folder and the new name will remain.
In your last post it became clear: you want to change the name of your Home Folder!
You can do it but not in Finder.
SystemPreferences->Users&Groups: change your account name there.
Are you trying to change the name of your Computer under Devices in the Finder sidebar? If the computer, it's in System Settings > Sharing.
