External drive no longer working

so I recently had issues with my main disk booting up and I fixed it by restoring all the data onto a passport and using it to run my Mac but now all of the sudden, It wont boot up. It says it is bootable but it also can't be repaired so I'd like to try and fix it my self before I have to pay money to get it fixed. Please respond asap because I do need this computer for school. Thanks.

If you have a 16GB USB2 or USB3 flash drive, then you can use OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support and How to install OS X on an external drive connected to your Mac - Apple Support to create an external bootable volume, which will allow diagnosing the problems with the internal and external disk, both. Internet Recovery is supported on Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support or later models.

If you have a second Mac, then Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support

allows the working Mac to diagnose issues with a non-working Mac. It requires appropriate cables/gender-benders depending on the two Macs.
