Don't give up on Aperture

I think that giving up on Aperture and accepting its demise is not our only option, Aperture is by far the best digital photo application that Apple (or indeed any other software developer) have created and as such, must not be allowed to disappear.

If we all create a groundswell of opinion we can persuade them to reinstate this Rolls Royce of an application. Lets unite, and rise up to remind Apple that Adobe cannot be the provsole digital photo platform on the planet.

Unfortunately you will have to change at some point. Some folks say that they won't update the OS and just keep using Aperture, but one day your Mac will break and you'll need to replace it. At that point you will have to use a new OS, and if Aperture won't run on that, then you will have a crisis on you hands.

Now is the time to evaluate alternatives and select one, so that you can do the transition is an orderly and managed fashion. If you think that might be too stressful, then imagine the stress when you're learning a new OS on a new computer and a new app all at the same time, and you can't even access the Aperture Library.

Adobe are not the only people with apps in this space, tho probably LR is the nearest to Aperture, and has a migration tool. But there are others: Capture One, Corel AfterShot, ON1 PhotoRaw, Luminar promises a new DAM app in 2018 and so on.

Frankly, I don't see that you have a choice. Do it now when it can be managed, or later when it's a crisis. That's your choice.

You may disagree but it's factually accurate to say that the Mac versions of these apps are more powerful and have more features than the iOS versions.

That Apple made their decisions in the interest of selling the products they make seems rather like common sense. I'm not sure why you're surprised...

The Mac versions are more powerful than the iOS versions but not as powerful or easy to use as they were before Apple chose to make them more like the iOS versions. That is what I mean by "dumbed down".

I am sure that Apple is making the changes in the interest of selling their products. What other reason would they have? We are, I think, complaining that Apple is killing off their most capable applications to focus more on the sharing of selfies with each other. I suppose that is where Apple sees the money. They have the capability and the money to serve both ends of the spectrum, the people who do real work with their Macs as well as the shallow selfie takers, but are choosing to throw the one group to the side.

Well easy to use is arguable, but as for the other point, as I said:

When the apps were re-booted to share the data formats some features were lost, sure, but they are being added back as the apps are developed.

I note the sneering tone in which the word selfie is used on the thread. These are folks too who are entitled to take any photos they want. Selfies have been around for a very long time...

I'm not really surprised! The writing was on the wall when Jobs removed the word 'computer' from the official company name.

Nevertheless, I feel let down and dismayed that Apple gave the impression Aperture was an important software product for nearly 10 years then dropped it like a dirty snow cone.

I'm a devout capitalist. I realize Apple's job is making money for the stockholders. I have no problem with that. Apple has more money than God. It's hard to believe they couldn't have continued to develop a pro image app AND placate photographers of the selfie and sharing types.

Interesting!

I'm getting replies to my last post by email but they are not showing up here???

For the record I am not advocating that particular petition website, really pointing out that they exist and could be an answer to the above question.

I don't think you would get anywhere with Tim Cook, he's probably the one who made the decision and he didn't strike me to be the sort of person who would change their mind easily.

Also. How do you quote someone on here? I cant find a button.

If that happens again, reply to the last post in the discussion, that you can see. That will usually force the missing replies to show in the discussion.

Some of us got in the habit to post just a single character, a ".2 or similar, to make the missing relies show.

The community hosts are working on that problem.

Wow, do I agree with this idea and I'm anxious to help make this happen. I actually came to the Aperture forum hoping there might be something going on like this. Ever since I had to switch to Lightroom I've noticed so many differences that Aperture does so much better. I should mention that I switched to Apple back in 2004 specifically due to Aperture. Version 1.0 had no Referenced Files option so I moved on to Lightroom. I used Lightroom for 4-5 years before trying Aperture again at version 3.0. Aperture's version 3.0 made me move back i to the Apple fold. Now that I've had to go back to Lightroom I can't believe how superior Aperture is to the Adobe's Lightroom. Yes, Aperture needed updated processing tools but it's workflow system is so superior. I teach hundreds of photo enthusiasts a year and many of them feel the same about the demise of Aperture. I'm hopeful we can make Apple rethink their decision to kill THE BEST photo exigent workflow program on the market and bring Aperture back bigger and better than before. Please visit my Blog for ongoing updates on how we may all add our voice to make this happen and click on the Bring Back Apple's Aperture Movement category.
