Q: Don't give up on Aperture

I think that giving up on Aperture and accepting its demise is not our only option, Aperture is by far the best digital photo application that Apple (or indeed any other software developer) have created and as such, must not be allowed to disappear.

If we all create a groundswell of opinion we can persuade them to reinstate this Rolls Royce of an application. Lets unite, and rise up to remind Apple that Adobe cannot be the provsole digital photo platform on the planet.

    You think so?

Well I made that statement from reading and interview with Randy Ubillos it which it appears that person concerned refers to their husband and in addition the article was headed by the photo of a woman.

I have acknowledged my error by modifying my post.

More to the point, the response to my post and others highlights the "point scoring" attitude that this thread seems to have taken on.

The title of this thread is "Don't Give Up On Aperture" and I would suggest that those who have "Given up on Aperture" go and start a thread where they can congratulate themselves on their brilliantly informed choice.

What response to a factually incorrect post would you prefer?

Oh, and don't tell others what or where to post.

The support technician I talked to yesterday told me to go to the feedback section and put in specific feedback about Aperture 3. He said the developers do read them. Not certain how accurate the info was but I did it anyhow.

We've always been told that the Feedback is read and that there is no guarantee that what is posted here will be. So yes, if you want to communicate to the Developers that's certainly the way to go.

Huh? There are exactly zero circumstances when Photos is required to import images from a memory card. Zip. Nada. None at all. Not a single one.

    Terence,"

As an Apple sycophant I'd not expect you to understand/believe that Apple has produced a stinker that works for some and not for others! I'm here to tell you there is/are instances where Photos takes control of the import process. (In fact, just a few days ago a friend asked me, "Jerry, do you know how to stop Photos from taking over the importing process every time I insert a memory card." That makes at least 2 of us with this problem! So... there is not ZIP. not NADA. Sorry!

I'm traveling (also the reason I'm responding somewhat late). I'm importing images every night. Last night the 1st memory card was inserted. This time nothing happened even though my preference is for Adobe Downloader to open. When the 2nd card was inserted there was good ol' Photos wanting to import when I have clearly told it, "I don't need or want you". This same scenario has repeated itself the last 3 nights except that more often than not Photos raises it's ugly head to take over the importing process as the computer's first response to the memory card insertion.

I understand Photos works well for the cadre who use it and answers their needs for image software. It simply does not work for me and I have little use for it aside from some minimal sharing of grandchildren's photos. Therefore, I'd like Photos to get off my back and allow me to use my computer in my own way.

Pop a memory card into a card reader, use the Finder. Works 100% of cases.

Don't want to use Finder! I want to use Adobe Bridge Downloader.

    Terence Devlin wrote:

Image Capture. Works 100% of cases.

I have been a longtime user of Image Capture. I have used it to control my downloading process for years. I have used it to scan documents and etc. It no longer does what I need. It is so useless as to remind me of a rubber crutch.

    Terence Devlin wrote:

So, with a memory card you can use The Finder, Photos, Image Capture, (and, if you still have them, iPhoto, Aperture), or Lightroom etc etc etc Not sure how much more control you want or need...

To repeat... I don't want to use any of those! Please understand and (be sure), the control I desire is for Photos to STOP coming up every time I insert a memory card in my card reader. To me that sounds like a doable and reasonable request of software on my computer.

So not so much an example of Apple doing anything so much as a clueless user...

I find this comment and the tone of your message very offensive and condescending! And, the main reason I am responding to you at all.

I would submit that you are not quite as knowledgeable as you think you are (you certainly have NO grasp of my problem) and that your attempts to shore up Apple's character cloud your thinking.

Please stick to what you know and avoid making critical personal judgments of those who write here. In this case we voice displeasure with Apple's decision to fully support Aperture for 9 or 10 years and give all appearance that it was one of their principle products then unceremoniously drop it like a hot potato.

I understand that Apple's main goal in life is to make a profit. As a capitalist myself I have no problem with that. But, I find it hard to believe that continued minimal support of Aperture would be a huge money drain. In fact, it may have helped sell computers.

So, what you want is that Photos should not launch automatically when you connect a device or card? If you'd said that, that is what I would have answered, but you didn't. You said

"How about control of when Photos is and IS NOT wanted to import images from a memory card? This is another Apple function that is "do it our way or don't do it".

Even if the app launches it's still not an example of "do it our way..." Never heard of command-q?

Have done that several times. Photos (re-checks) the box nd open next time as though the preference was never applied.

Interestingly. Apple is so in love with this app they won't let me delete it from my machine. MORE "DO IT MY WAY".

I regret to announce Apple has made it impossible for me to post a comment in my defense.

Is any using El Capitan with Aperture and is there any problems. I am still trying to use IDVD but seem to be having problems with burning discs but that could be anything.

I love my Aperture  and do not want to give it up. The Batch editing is fantastic when you have lots of photos.....

I will use Aperture with Yosemite until I have to buy a new iMac and will have to use the OS X it comes with. It would be nice if Apple sold Aperture to a third party for development but that is only wishful thinking. Hopefully by the time my iMac needs to be replace a program will come along that will be to most Aperture users liking.

I don't know what is up with the forum or this thread today. I replied earlier today but I don't see it anymore. So here is it again:

The answer for you may be to delete the Photos app from your computer. It sounds like you don't want to use it. It sounds like the designers didn't consider what would happen with memory cards (or maybe they did, which would be worse) and this behavior cannot be stopped. If you don't want it and it is bothering you (which I totally get), delete it.

Ignoring Photos should suffice.   Photos is installed as part of the system, so each system update wil reinstall it.

I'm not perfectly sure, that it is safe to delete a part of the system.

Better keep badgering Apple with feedback that the launch behavior of Photos is not user friendly and annoying.

" I am still trying to use IDVD..."

Word of advice: start planning your migration away from DVDs. This is dated technology that will soon go the way of CD-ROMs and floppy disks.
