Q: Don't give up on Aperture

I think that giving up on Aperture and accepting its demise is not our only option, Aperture is by far the best digital photo application that Apple (or indeed any other software developer) have created and as such, must not be allowed to disappear.

If we all create a groundswell of opinion we can persuade them to reinstate this Rolls Royce of an application. Lets unite, and rise up to remind Apple that Adobe cannot be the provsole digital photo platform on the planet.

    Photoshop.

You are kidding, Csound, aren't you?

It used Photoshop occasionally as an external editor, when I needed graphics - layers, transparency, text annotations. But never as a DMA.   I simply never got beyond the trial stage with Adobe Bridge.

And I liked, that Aperture is photo centric. It has superior tools to develop the photo, but for graphics and many borders I sed a plug-in.

The fact is that Aperture, while not gone has one foot out of door already  Time to plan ahead, otherwise the day will come when Aperture stops working. And if you remember, anything I take that matters is on film, couple of file cabinets and a few labels gives me all the DAM that I need.

That's true. But I will not settle for a second best. I keep Aperture running while I am looking around, and check the options. There are many photo editors, but I want a lossless editing, combined with a photo database, that I can design to my needs, easy access to all EXIF and IPCT metadata, and tools for presets to get the workflow automatic. And all should fit in with Apple's eco system.

That shouldn't take long, it's a very short list.

    Photoshop.

    a) Since when is Photoshop a DAM?

    b) Since when do Adobe products have workflows and usability remotely comparable to Apple products lie Aperture?

I'm rather baffled at how some folks on this forum persist in making nonsensical suggestions for alternative products while refusing too acknowledge that there is no decent substitute for Aperture on the market.

So pick your alternative, just do it before Aperture stops working.

It matters not at all to me what you choose. I hate digital photography as a medium. It's for record keeping, no more.

It seems to me you might not be ideally qualified to offer helpful contributions on this topic at all. You seem to have no understanding of the differences between apps designed for photo retouching/optimization, image editing/compositing, and digital asset management. And the fact that you "hate digital photography" puts you in an even worse situation that fans of the abandoned Aperture app, since film photography became an anachronism quite some time ago even among professionals.

Please spare us your advice. You are not making any helpful contributions to this discussion.

Where did you get the authority to instruct others what and where to post.

But I'll just ignore it anyway.

Apple used to make tools. Now they make toys.

Yeah, regretfully. I'm looking at the 100's if not thousands of hours editing images in Aperture that I will lose when I get the migration to take place and I don't know what else to think. Apple themselves changed their name from ...computers to ....electronics a while ago to signify their change in mentality. I've personally probably bought my last Apple device

Yeah, like a MacBookPro or a MacPro is a toy... right. Just because they stopped making your App.

No, Terence, the MacBook Pro is not a toy...you're free to sit around and see how long Apple is still making it. My "App" is how I keep a roof over my family's head. There's really nothing more damaging that Apple could have done to me, my business and my family than abandon Aperture in the way in which they did.

Since we're on the topic, though, the contemporary MacBook Pro is only marginally improved from my mid-2012 model while Apple toys are gaining by leaps and bounds. I wanted to be an Apple guy for life, but Apple doesn't want me, a professional creative. If you think anything different it must be Mountain Berry that you're enjoying

Okay so Apple aren't making toys then? So why did you say it? Petulance? Apple did nothing to you. Stick with using Aperture, don't upgrade. Whatever.
