Q: Afraid to up-grade to OS X 10.10.5 because of the replacement of iPhoto with Photo.

Afraid to up-grade to OS X 10.10.5 because of the replacement of iPhoto with Photo.

Have 30K plus photos in my iPhoto library sorted into Smart Albums. Each photo is labeled with a title, usually a persons name or place i.e. ‘JACKSON’ or ‘UCLA’ and the same title is used for the title of the Smart Album. Photos are then sorted by ‘Title is JACKSON’ or ‘Title is UCLA’.

1. I understand Photo has done away with ability to place a title on each photo, is this correct?

2. I understand one can up-grade to the latest OS X and decline to import/convert iPhoto into Photo, is this correct?

3. If convert iPhoto to Photo are my Smart Albums deleted?

4. Since I collect pictures of people and scenes from blogs by right-clicking on a picture and selecting ‘Add Image to iPhoto Library’, is this capability included in the latest OS X up-grade?

    1. I understand Photo has done away with ability to place a title on each photo, is this correct?

No, you can add titles to photos and description. If you added custom titles in iPhoto, they will show in Photos in the Info panel and below the thumbnails of the photos.  Only, Photos will not use the filenames as the default titles, if no title has been assigned.

    2. I understand one can up-grade to the latest OS X and decline to import/convert iPhoto into Photo, is this correct?

If you never launch Photos, it will not migrate the iPhoto Library to Photos. You need iPhoto 9.6.1 to run it on Yosemite.

    3. If convert iPhoto to Photo are my Smart Albums deleted?

Your smart albums will be migrated, if Photos can reproduce the constraints you used in the smart rules, see this support document:

How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

    • Most Smart Albums are preserved in Photos. Smart Albums with selection criteria that isn’t supported by Photos usually migrate to Smart Albums with "(modified)" added to the Smart Album name; in cases where none of the Smart Album criteria are supported in Photos, the Smart Album isn't migrated.

    4. Since I collect pictures of people and scenes from blogs by right-clicking on a picture and selecting ‘Add Image to iPhoto Library’, is this capability included in the latest OS X up-grade?

Safari is now showing "Add Image to Photos" instead of "Add Image to iPhoto"

Whatever you decide to do, don't upgrade to Yosemite without making a full backup of your system, before you do that, so you can revert to the original state, if need be.

    Tks so much for info.

One followup: In Photo can one of the selection criteria for importing a iPhoto Smart Album be where the iPhoto Smart Album name: 'UCLA' was created with 'Match the following condition: 'Title     is      UCLA'?

You can define smart albums with constraints "Title is ....", "Title includes ....", or "Text is ...", Text includes".

So you should be able to create similar smart albums as you are having now.
