if the application in the dock has a small triangle beneath it it is open.
click on the app in the dock and go to File>Quit
otherwise
hold down COMMAND and tap TAB
Will go toggle through all open apps
then release COMMAND when you get to the app you want
go to File>Quit
drag up out of the dock to the desktop area and hold mouse button down until cloud animation appears, then let go of button.
if the apps are currently in use this will not be possible.
I'm a newbie. This is my first mac. It is not working. It must be in use. How do I close it. I just can't figure it out.
i got it!
How about just right-click on the application Dock icon and choose Quit from the pop-up menu.
3rd way to skin a cat; sure.
Hold alt key and pull out the representation (object). I think this should work.

Times change, system change. In my youth -Jaguar- there was no special way necessary to do this.
