Slow Internet vs PC

I've seen a few similar posts but I have a MacBook with OS X 10.4.8. My internet connection is pretty straight-forward: cable modem to a Netgear router, and ethernet out from the router to my MacBook as well as a PC laptop from work.

I've experienced very slow Internet downloads of basic pages like google.com or nytimes.com; meanwhile, my work PC which is connected via ethernet to the same router has a pretty decent download speed. The problem is not constant - sometimes my Internet sessions are fine and fast with the Mac so it's intermittent. But when the internet connection is slow, I just get a message saying "looking for google.com" and often have to hit refresh many times before the page is finally opened. Very frustrating.

I've disabled everything else on the macbook so that Ethernet is the primary internet connection. i've even tried going direct from the cable modem to the macbook but still experienced the problem. that, combined with my laptop PC working without a problem, seems to me to rule out the router as a problem -- unless there's a known issue with Netgear routers and Mac compatibility?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

User uploaded fileI use those DNS servers and they made a huge difference for me.

Also, check to see if IPv6 is turned on. If it is, turn it off. If it is off, turn it one. Some ISPs like IPv6 and some do not. Toggle it on or off and see if that makes a difference.

Another thing to look for is to make sure that Airport is listed first as your connection type. If it is not, simply drag it to the top of the list.

What speeds are you paying for and what speeds do you get if you measure download speeds at a site like PC Pitstop?

I've got a great connection: 2912 kilobits per second. That's pretty much maxing out my cable connection. I have changed IPv6 to "off" as it was on "automatically" and also added in a DNS server address from the previous post. The problem generally occurs in the evening hours, so will see tomorrow night whether there's a difference.

Many thanks
