Q: Rear camera stopped working after upgrade to iOS 9

updated to iOS 9 on my iPhone 5.  once completed the rear (main) camera shows only a black screen.  the front facing camera seems to work fine.  other apps don't seem to be able to use the rear camera.  There is also a warning symbol when tapped declares the flash cannot be used because the iPhone is too hot.  My phone seems to be at room temperature.  Also the flashlight does not work.  I noticed the warning symbol doesn't appear (after a phone restart) until I switch to the front camera and back to the rear camera

This same issue seems to have appeared in iOS 8.4 updates from searching the forums here.

I have restored my phone and turned it off and on, but nothing has worked.

anyone?

thanks for any help.

i am expecting as Live photo feature is included in ios9.1 and it may have done some programming change, which can lead to some of the device camera driver miss match..

Unfortunately my solution works for short time - for me 1 day and then again the same issue. I have found out another trick with short term of effectiveness but if someone wants to try it:

    1. Go to Settings ->General ->Accessibility-> VoiceOver ON

    2. Turn off the phone for some mins

    3. Turn on again, turn off the VoiceOver

To be honest with me it works for a couple of minutes.

Well i hope but really doubt that iOS 9.2 will solve this issue. To solve a problem you have to agree there is one and as long as Apple declares it as a hardware issue...

I tried everything listed on this discussion, and on other pages. I tried the voice over switch, the low power mode switch, restarting my phone, flipping my rear and front camera repeatedly and then restarting my phone, etc. None of these methods worked for me! My back camera still shows a black screen. my front camera works, but when i switch to the rear facing again, it freezes the last view taken in by the front camera, and gives me the yellow " ! " sign, saying that my flash is disabled and that my phone has to cool down before it is enabled again. I have an iPhone 5S running iOS 9.1.

I'm really disappointed in Apple! The problem won't go away if they just ignore it! Tens of thousands of people are having this exact problem, and they refuse to try to fix it. I'm just praying that iOS 9.2 will fix this problem! Did anyone download the beta version of it and find out if it is fixed yet?

Beta version didn't fix it, downloaded it yesterday - still the same issue.

Same as most of above .. rear camera went black on my iPhone6 also the flash then I discoverd there was no torch and if I flip from front camera to rear it puts the warning triangle in the corner I click on that then it tells me to wait for my phone to cool down all this happened days after the update with a few resets it work again for a short time now its permanently broke .. Come on Apple this isn't a hardware issue . Over 25.000 views here now customers are watching something need to be done about this

I have same problem. I upgrade to 9.1 and camera went black now. Only differences flash seems to be not impacted.

Actually i saw some strange behaviour just before upgrading to 9.1, I wonder if anybody has that before the camera dies. My home button stop working for one click. but it was not hw related, double click was working and even when i enable accessibility assistance, i wasn't able see home screen with one click. So I decide to upgrade to 9.1. then, camera dies just like many others.

    Hi everybody!

I had the same issue. I upgraded to IOS 9 and after 3 weeks my iphone 5 rear camera stopped working. Same story as everybody...black screen and led overheating warning message. I tried everything: reset ( home button + power button), energy saving mode on/off, pushing on the camera and even a factory reset but unfortunately nothing worked. Since my iPhone is out of warranty i bought a rear camera module on internet (6 Euro) and replaced by myself. I just finished the work, turned the device on and now it's working perfectly again. Apparently was an hardware failure even if i was very sceptical about that...(probably mama apple decided to burn the camera with ios 9! ). Jokes apart wish everybody a good evening and hope this helped.

    Greetings from Florence.

    Federico

Thats a good idea. I sent them feedback too. I'll probably wait until iOS 9.2 is officially released (most probably in December). If it is still broken after that, my last option will be to take it to a repair shop and replace the camera.

Please fix this ASAP!!! I'm having the same issues of the rear camara not working and recieving the yellow warning telling me that my flash can't work because my phone is over heating. I've tried everything. I would really like to use my phone to function properly. These phones are too expensive for this.

i have an even better one. Since buying my iPhone 6s Plus I have been unable to take video. A bug in iCloud is stalling uploads and videos are not appearing  white box appears where the video thumbnails should be when I try to take a video in either 4K or 60fps mode. I have been able to get the odd video working in 30fps mode but not very often. Bizarre

Seems there is only one way to solve this problem - replace the rear camera. Did this and works like a charm again (iPhone 5, rear camera went black after upgrade from iOS 8.4.1 to 9.1).
