Q: Rear camera stopped working after upgrade to iOS 9

updated to iOS 9 on my iPhone 5.  once completed the rear (main) camera shows only a black screen.  the front facing camera seems to work fine.  other apps don't seem to be able to use the rear camera.  There is also a warning symbol when tapped declares the flash cannot be used because the iPhone is too hot.  My phone seems to be at room temperature.  Also the flashlight does not work.  I noticed the warning symbol doesn't appear (after a phone restart) until I switch to the front camera and back to the rear camera

This same issue seems to have appeared in iOS 8.4 updates from searching the forums here.

I have restored my phone and turned it off and on, but nothing has worked.

anyone?

thanks for any help.

and one more thing..after my first atempt of going back to factory settings(whipped the phone and started it as a new iphone),the camera worked for about five minutes.I took some photos(4-5)and then the same problem reappeared. So,if this was a hardware problem, once the camera is broken,is broken no matter what i do with the software on my phone. How do you explain this,Apple???

For what it's with (not much I suspect) I have just sent this to Apple:

    Hi Apple

I've been an enthusiastic and loyal customer since 2008: 3 MacBooks, 2 iPhones, an iMac, iPads and countless bits and pieces.

I am SO very disappointed though about the reaction I have just had trying to get my iPhone5 sorted out following the upgrade to iOS9. The rear camera no longer works.  This seems a common problem.

The Genius bar checked it over today and said it's not a software issue but a hardware failure and no longer covered by the warranty.

I find this an incredible coincidence. The Genius Bar said that it was possible the camera was failing and the iOS upgrade accelerated the failure. This seems very odd to me.

The offer of €97 as a trade in or €279 for a new iPhone5 is disappointing in the extreme. My iPhone5 worked perfectly before the iOS upgrade. Now it doesn't. I cannot believe that it is not a software failure. The coincidence is just too remarkable.

Come on Apple, please do not ruin the faith in the one corporation that I thought impressive. The upgrade has "damaged" my €600 phone. Please put this right.

I have just joined the no camera club.  My rear camera on my iPhone 5 just died today just in time for my sons first cub scout event.  Black screen with no image.  Power on and off, full restoration, restore as new, low power toggle...nothing is working.  Sure seems odd to have so many "hardware failures at the same time.

Apologies for the slightly slow reply - I'm travelling at the moment.

I can't now found the contact email I used. But to be honest, I think it was a pretty futile avenue away; one of those sites where you can type in your comments and whilst they may be read, no one will reply.

As I say I'm travelling at the moment so can't really follow this up. But I will when I get back. I'm not done with this yet. If it was just me I'd say, sort of, fair enough, hardware failure. But just how many people has this happened to? If it is hardware failure it must be heading to the Guiness Book of Records for The Greatest Number of Coincidences....

I'm not a FB user but does Apple have a page - must do right? Maybe we can get lots of people to post something on the FB page or Twitter account. Just how many people are impacted by this? Given over 10,000 people have viewed these pages, I'm suspecting it's more than a handful.

My iPad Air forward facing camera worked fine. I "upgraded" to IOS 9 - now it doesn't work. 9.02 didn't fix it. Bit Bummer!

Every upgrade, new problems. Not good.

Since my post from 5 October. I have tried every "solution" in this topic and still the camera doesn't work.

Its sad to see that we are unable to downgrade back to iOS8 cause Apple has stopped signing iOS 8.4.1. I truly believe the camera stopped working because of an upgrade. As many others in this topic have the same issue.

After having fixed the issue for a month or so, as of yesterday the rear facing camera is once again broken.  Has anyone reported this issue to a tech or mac focused web site?

Main camera failed for no apparent reason. I tried several suggestions listed here and finally tried turning low power button on and off as mentioned a few time here. It worked. I have iPhone 6 with 9.0.2. I turned the low power ON for 30 sec then OFF and then reboot phone. I hope this helps.

I just discovered I have camera problems with my iPhone 5. Everything was fine before the firmware update. My main camera works but not the one facing me. I've been trying all of the suggestion but nothing has worked yet.

The low power suggestion was not working at first but it suddenly did. My camera is working now.

Make sure that after restarting your phone, check that no application is running in the background [for some reason several apps were turned on after the restart]. Close all these apps before turning on the camera. Hope it works for you.

Thanks for the heads up, i guess there not much point in updating my Iphone 5s if it does not solve the rear-facing camera issues. Still contacting apple support for any resolution to this problem, but regretfully still no concrete action taken to resolve it. Has anyone had any success with this problem?
