Q: Podcast app crashing in iOS 9

I just installed iOS 9 on my iPhone 6. When opening the podcast app I get a white screen, "Updating Library" and then it crashes after about 15 seconds. Anyone else experiencing this?

I've quit the app.

Restarted the phone.

Tried putting phone in airplane mode and opening the app.

Same result each time.

Help!

I am also having the same issue.  I've tried everything but the full restore but am reluctant to as I've only seen one person say that helped.

I'm looking into downgrading back to 8.4.1 has anyone else tried that approach?  I'm also on the beta program, but rarely install beta releases. I've heard from other forums that the 9.1 beta does NOT fix this issue so I'm not sure it's something that Apple is actively working to resolve.  The podcast app may just be in Sherlock status at this point.

Same problem on on 9.1 beta (13B5110e) -- so don't hold your breath.

I submitted as a bug via Feedback Assistant app when it first started happening (when I installed iOS 9 beta in August).

Very annoying as it is my most used app. Downcast and Overcast don't really do it for me ...

So, today, after lots of time working with Apple Support, I found that my iPhone 5s:

~WILL make Podcast App crash after upgrading to iOS 9. Nothing within the phone or linked to iTunes will change that. (except Restore).

~you CAN totally restore phone as a brand new phone, then sync your podcasts from Mac and phone will load the New Podcast App and function.

    BUT:

~you CAN NOT then restore your phone with iTunes backup, as it was before, without causing Podcast App to be defective and crash again.

~you CAN NOT buy "iMazing" ($35.00 to use backup feature) to backup your phone, restore phone as NEW, then restore backup with iMazing, without causing Podcast App to be defective and crash again.

    So....I can throw out everything on my phone and start from scratch, and HAVE podcasts;

or........I can keep my phone as it is, and use a different app for podcasts.

I should have learned my lesson years ago, with a huge fiasco updating iTunes (spent days, and $100+) to "work around it" with Apple Support:

    OR...

Wait until any major new OS goes to its .1 version, then read the reviews and decide if it's a deal breaker, then upgrade when it is much safer

What AppleHome wrote seems true - the process worked for me.

I could not upgrade and use a saved backup to restore my iPod Touch. But restoring the iPod and setting it up as a brand new item worked and allows access into the Podcast app. I have been able to successfully sync my podcasts and play them.

Likewise....Apple Warrantee store tried simple reload....failed....did total wipe to factory in store....STILL re-loading settings and data....and Podcast App STILL crashes at everything ( on 5S ) ....loading, playing.....LOOKING at it !!

the Downcast app works fine, so I am going to look for all my podcasts through them.  I have to refer to my iTunes Library for the names, since I also only have the white 'upgrading library' screen. wish I could totally delete the app

Add another. Updated to 9 on my iPod touch and now Podcasts crashes. "Updating Library" then turns black and crashes to home screen.

That is not acceptable to have to find and re-set all the Podcasts and setting.

Reset without being able to restore is not an acceptable fix.  This procedure destroys all stored user data.

The best way for us to be heard is to submit feedback directly to Apple. It takes less than 2 minutes. Do it now. The more voices the better!

@jplang56: Would you be willing to update your original post with that link and call to action? It'll help us get a non-restore fix faster. Thanks so much!
