Nov 10, 2015 1:22 AM in response to alexanderfrommooresvilleby djoeyl,Hi,
A friend of mine tried to update her iPad2 via iTunes 12 and guess what, it became a brick like mine and everyone else. She brought to the service centre and they told her that the iPad is gone and she need to pay for a replacement. She couldn't start/restart/force start etc.
Well, I found out that even though the iPad 2 in the recovery mode state, your data is still in tact (well, basically everything is still there, apps and all)
Through sheer luck and plenty of sleepless nights, I discovered that if you install iTunes 10.6.3 (do not update to iTunes 12) and attempt to recover the OS with any older iOS (compatible with 10.6.3) the update will fail .... BUT.... the iPad2 will restart and you'd see the iOS with all your apps etc as it was before the upgrade. (Google for iTunes 10.6.3 and iTunes 6 or something.)
Unfortunately, it means that it's still at iOS 4 but it is usable and you don't have to pay for a replacement.
Well, I still haven't figured out how to upgrade successfully to iOS9, gonna try bwttchd's method

Nov 12, 2015 10:20 PM in response to sherillfromphoenixby Doug.ie,AT this stage in the process I think the computer is looking for Drivers to make the USB connection to the iPad. It might be worth a shot to try uninstalling iTunes on your computer and reinstalling, (this will also give you the latest version of iTunes if you didn't have it already) and should reinstall the necessary drivers when you hook up to the iPad with your USB cable. I saw that iTunes icon on the iPad screen when I was doing the update to 9.1, and during this time my PC laptop was looking for 'USB' drivers in Windows update. It found them, and installed them, and the update to the iPad continued thereafter. Hopefully the next iOS 9.2 will restore successful wireless upgrades! Hope this helps..at least no harm should come from uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes...but not sure what that might do to any iTunes music you have..should be able to restore that from the cloud!

Nov 20, 2015 6:47 PM in response to alexanderfrommooresvilleby MikeHN92,I am currently experiencing this same problem. My dad explained to me that his YouTube app kept prompting him to update YouTube. However when he tried to his iPad 2 stated the iOS needed to update because his was currently running iOS 4.x.x can't remember the exact number. I plugged his iPad in, was recognized right away in iTunes prompted the update. I let it download and run it's course, but now the iPad is just stuck on the plug into iTunes screen and iTunes will prompt me that the "iPad can't be update; you must restore it to factory settings."
I've clicked restore, which closes and pops up the option of "Restore and Update" click that, watch the messages that it's extracting the software and "restoring the software on this iPad." But, then it doesn't complete the rest of the way. I get a error message "The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9)." I went through and read up on the error since it is saying it's a USB issue, tried multiple computers, multiple Apple cords. I don't believe it's a USB issue. I have tried to put it into the Device Firmware Update mode but it will not go through, making sure to follow all of the instructions described here If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
This is just very frustrating, everything else on his iPad was working completely fine up until YouTube would no longer work and prompted that the iOS be updated. My dad has been without his iPad for 2 weeks now.

Nov 20, 2015 7:49 PM in response to tjradiostarby MikeHN92,Yeah, I tried to do the method that user djoeyl point out in his post about downloading iTunes 10.6.3 however, when I tried to install it, it doesn't go through. I made sure to uninstall all versions of iTunes that were currently installed, restarted comp, then attempted to install iTunes 10.6.3. So I can't even attempt this cause the program won't install.

Nov 21, 2015 9:55 PM in response to Happylindaby gail from maine,You are going to have to specify the exact issues you are experiencing as this thread, being 7 pages long, has listed several different types of issues that people feel belong under the generic title of the thread. List exactly what you did, what happened, and where you are now. If you have tried any troubleshooting that has failed please also include that so we don't have to go back and forth with suggestions.
Also include the device type you are using.
Cheers,
