Getting two-factor authentication if two-step authentication is enabled?

What happens if two-step authentication is enabled for that Apple ID?


Will two-factor authentication still be offered or does two-step authentication need to be turned off first?

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.4.1, AT&T 32 GB

According to the article linked below by Glenn Fleishman in Macworld, enabling two-step authentication "doesn't prevent you from upgrading" to two-factor authentication.

I currently have two-step verification enabled, and two-factor authentication is currently unavailable on my account.
