Need help troubleshooting display problems

I have a late 2014 Mac Mini connected to an LG VGA monitor. It has worked fine since new, but now won't display anything. I use an Apple mini display port to VGA adaptor bought from the apple store with the Mini.

If I move the mini to the TV room and use HDMI cable, all works (so MM isn't dead)

If I connect the monitor at the same time as my TV and use dual displays then both displays work (shows MM can output through the thunderbolt to the VGA monitor).

If I connect the monitor to my macbook pro using the same cables all works (shows monitor, adaptor and cable work).

I have tried starting up with just the monitor in normal or safe mode - nothing.

The monitor detects that it is receiving a signal, but the display is blank.

I have unplugged, and replugged using both thunderbolt ports.

Any ideas?
