Its totally disgraceful that so many customers have been left high and dry without a working phone. My husband and I are of a mature age and whilst have no problems using our iPhones, we aren't very techy!   The stress incurred trying to navigate this problem and find a solution, has been a nightmare. Its only down to the advice from other community users that we at least have a phone that can make and accept calls again. He has lost everything else !  Not the end of the world by any means compared to others problems but still frustrating.

    HERE IS A FIX -

Guys this was posted by another member and IT WORKS! You have to restore to an older version of iOS, 8.4.1, set up as a new iPhone, then manually restore from your last backup.

Step 1 - Backup your pictures! Even though you can't get to your phone and use it you should still be able to backup your pictures

Step 2 - Download IOS 8.4.1 for your iPhone or iPad from this site --> https://ipsw.me/8.4.1

Step 3 - Reboot phone into DFU mode - hold down power button and home button - when it reboots let go of power button - still hold home button

At this point it will ask you to connect your phone to iTunes - will have to connect phone to the computer.

Step 4 - Hold down the Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) and and then click restore.

Step 5 - Browse to the 8.4.1 file you downloaded and select it. This should restore to the previous IOS version. Note: This will wipe phone.

Step 6 - Restore from backup. Hope that you backed up before attempting to update.

EDIT: Reinstalled the apps by going into the app store and viewing my purchases - they're all there. Downloaded them all and they all sorted themselves back into their categories as I had them before. Whatsapp conversations were also restored so it works. HOORAY!

THANK YOU harpreet0singh!!! You're a life saver!! The only thing I lost was my purchased music & the 2 games I had purchased (least of my worries), but everything else restored great!

I ended up having to stop after upgrading to 9 and not restore from backup since restoring from backup just ended up messing things up again.....  It took a bit but I ended up entering all my passwords and downloading the applications again and organizing them but I am finally able to use the iPhone 4s.

I've updated, restored to my phone to the factory settings, rebooted the phone for two days now and I'm still stuck on the white screen that reads in the bottom "slide to upgrade." When is Apple going to fix this? I missed a phone interview because I couldn't be reached on my phone or reach my contact (since all my contacts were on my phone). Terrible costumer service. I want my phone back!

I'm having this same issue with both my iphone6 and my ipad Air 1.  Both were on ios8.4.1 and both are now locked at "slide to upgrade".  I cannot get around it, and I've tried everything in all of these forums and it doesn't work.  I did a restore and recovery by holding down the power button + home button, and then just holding the home button and then connecting to USB and itunes, then I erased the phone and restored.  But it will not allow you to restore to an earlier version of iOS, so I had to choose 9.0 again.  It restored and then got all the way to the same point where it locked yet again.  This really *****. There is no way around it.

If apple allow you to download 8.4.1 again via itunes, I could restore my phone to that and probably have a phone right now, but I can't.

Obviously this is not for everyone - but I found that if I followed the instructions (after getting the Swipe to upgrade) and reset to factory - then instead of restoring I just setup as a new iPhone it works (on iOS9) - but if I then restore from settings - it bricks it again....  obviously there is an incompatibility between some setting that is backed up and iOS9.... so I just bit the bullet and spent an hour and a half rei-entering passwords - adding applications back on from my computer etc.

    Hey

try doing a DFU on the device, which is:

    plug the device into itunes

hold the home and sleep/wake button (the lock button) for about 8 secs

let go of the sleep wake button, still holding on to the home button

(this puts your device into recovery mode)

Itunes will detect a device in recovery mode and will ask if you want to restore and update

    click on restore and update

this will delete the software and reinstall it.

Set the device up as new, dont restore you back up on to the device.

Give Apple a couple of days, they'll come out with a update to fix it.

iace99 -- do you have a laptop or other computer you could get iTunes on? That's how I did it. I downloaded the previous iOS version onto my laptop, then did my phone updates from iTunes on that laptop.

I was able to restore from a very old backup on itunes.  It lost my iCloud backup from today.  The key for me is not to set the passcode.  I didn't set it during the initiation screens.  I got the phone working and then decided to turn it on and it broke it all over again.

I had that issue. Follow the steps I took here and you'll be able to restore successfully AND have iOS 9 >iPhone 5 Stuck on slide to upgrade after iOS 9 update..
