I need to split a single cell into 2, but from what I've read, it creates an issue with sorting. My spreadsheet requires no sorting as it's just for iMovie Trailer info. Surely Numbers can do this. I'd hate to think Excel can do something like this when Numbers can't!

Numbers does not have a split command. You can, however, merge the other cells to create the same effect:
Here is a new, blank table. I select two cell to merge so that in row 2 and below the cells appear to be split:
Now select the menu item "Table > Merge"
now row 2 appears to be split compared to row 1. select rows to copy and paste as needed
Thank you, Wayne. I needed to split a cell horizontally, but this method works for that too. I'd already used this method, but was hoping there was an easier way. I had 24 columns in which I needed to merge 2 cells, just to get one split cell using this method. What a pain...

I want to second Wayne's suggestion that you find another way. Merging cells can make it difficult to work with thte data in the table.
