iOS 9 updated apps won't copy to iTunes

After updating an iPhone 6 to iOS 9.0, when doing an automatic sync or manual backup to iTunes 12.3.0.44, any apps that have been updated on the iPhone do not get copied (backed up) to iTunes anymore. If the app has been updated on iTunes but not the iPhone, then iTunes will correctly update the iPhone -- just not the other way around.

Similarly, using iTunes File -> Devices -> Transfer Purchases no longer works with any device that's been updated to iOS 9.0.

**** real reason Apple are stopping you transfer apps to itunes*** is simply ensuring that iPhone users run the latest app versions (the ones with adverts, the poor app updates developers sometimes deliver - look at the App Store reviews for loads of examples). This has really annoyed me - not all new app updates give a better user experience - some new apps updates are slower, more restricted, poorly redesigned, don't even always work!. When this happens I often deleted the new updated app on my iPhone and transfered the old app (from iTunes) back to my iPhone. When I downloaded a new app and only IF it was better then the old app I would transfer (save) it to my iTunes library. This option is no more.

this new limitation is another step backwards toward decreased flexibility and increased apple control.

Apple up to their usual tricks again. Just got off the phone from a support agent for a wasted 70 minutes!

You think its bad now, just wait until any of you try and re download an APP that has been removed from the app store !! Good luck with that as you wont be able to as it will be removed from your purchased items.

I bought and paid for SID Player Pro and it was pulled by Apple and it doesnt show up in my purchased items in itunes so i cannot re download it. I do have it on another iphone but i cannot get it from that phone to my pc to re transfer it to my iphone 6S.

I was basically was told by Apple when you buy an app you don't buy it but are only licensed to use it.

I feel so let down by Apple and that app played a very sentimental part in my life!! It played C64 Sid music on it from games i used to play from when i was a kid with my cousin who died when i was young so that app was a way to go back and think of all the good times gaming with him. Yeah thanks for that Apple!

Also the app itself was very well laid out and a joy to use...

Its this attitude from Apple doing things like this that made me move over to Samsung Galaxy S3 a few years ago.

Quite simply they do not care for the little voices like us that are annoyed with them removing the ability to transfer an app to PC.

Sure app thinning is great but why couldn't we have it and also keep the ability to transfer whatever app we have purchased to our authorised and personal computer!

Shame on you Apple!

I just got off phone with Tier 2 AppleCare who reports this is an emerging issue, and he's not yet sure if:

A) it's a bug

B) the App Transfer is now "built in" to Back Up Now and that we simply won't see an indication that app transfer is happening.

If the latter, actually… with the multitude of new users over the years, unless I'm missing something, as a very long term user myself, I always wondered why did Apple feel the need to indicate that the transfer was happening, when after all, it is data that that like any data should be backed up in a back up. If you have used iTunes for a long time, in the early days you had to Control click Backup to get a drop down menu with Transfer, Sync and Backup. AppleCare was always fielding calls about what was the diff between Sync and Backup and then that difference disappeared from the process so when you backup or "Apply" a change, iTunes syncs and backs up all in one. So… it seems logical to me that App Transfer might be built in as of iOS 9. To me, it would make sense and be fine with me. But we do need to know that Apps are in fact being backed up. Although.. as most here know, all our apps are listed in "Purchased" so if we have to restore we can clean install and simply go to Purchased and download the Apps we want, which for me the times I've done this, I always change by list of Apps on a clean install for the ones I've stopped using and no longer need. So worse case is apps are NOT being transferred, but we do have a very viable solution if Restore isn't complete.

So while not a complete answer to this thread, just know Apple is aware of the app transfer issue and we just need to know if App Backup is built in and we're not being advised during a backup that the transfer is happening, or that it's a Bug and apps are not being transferred and a fix is in the works. The Tier 2 rep said he'd call me back when he had word which. If he does, I'll post what I learn next.

Hope this helps.

Not sure where to post this one, but it's related so hoping to be accused of stealing the thread… after backing up without knowing whether my last Apps were transferred, I then tried to update to iOS 9.2 and from within iTunes clicked Update and instead of starting the iOS 9.2 update process I get the message that iTunes is up to date and clicking iOS 9.2 Update button, won't update to iOS 9.2. Perhaps this is related to this computer (Mac Pro) is still on Lion (I'm building a clean installed new hard drive, yes slowly) But even though on Lion it shouldn't have this effect (I would hope). But it seems to be an iTunes/Lion issue because I'm able to do the update to iOS 9.2 using my Macbook Pro with OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 and am installing it as I type.

Paul and all...

I have the answer from Apple. Purchase Transfer was disconnected from iTunes Backup because Apple was finding that too many device owners' computers were maxed out, disk capacity wise, and when they did Purchase Transfer plus Backup, too many found their computers and/or devices were freezing due to lack of space.

So for now, we need to apply Purchase Transfer manually via the menu bar. With your device plugged in and iTunes launched:

iTunes > File > Devices > Transfer Purchases from (your device)

User uploaded file

And there it is. Problem solved!

Interesting that you can manually do a Purchase Transfer from an iOS device to iTunes, but it doesn't seem to work in my case: when I try it and then look at my apps in iTunes, it still says most of them need updating even though my iPhone has the latest version of most of these. I do understand the difference between the app-thinned and full versions, but even so you'd think that if there is manual purchase transfer option, it ought to just suck up the app-thinned versions. If it's more important to the keep the iTunes apps universal, that's fine too, but then why retain Purchase Transfer if it's largely not working?

Dec 16, 2015 4:04 AM in response to RichardLim

That's exactly my problem. After iTunes stopped asking if I wanted to transfers apps that were in my phone but not in my library, I tried to do it manually but it doesn't work. I don't even have a problem with updating apps, I could just do it on my computer and sync with my iphone, but the problem is with the apps I download on my phone! They are not backed up and I have to search for them in the App Store and download them again. That is very annoying and a waste of time.

Does anyone know if there's a fix for the problem yet? I'm having the exact same issues - newly downloaded and updated apps on the iPhone does not transfer to iTunes on Mac. I'm really concerned because app data are probably not being backed up.

I spoke to an Apple 'expert' online and deduced that they are unaware of the issue and can't give less of a **** about our problem. I'm hoping that the engineers are however aware and working on a fix.. Basically the 'expert' suggested doing a phone restart and consider purchasing additional iCloud space to do a backup instead of iTunes. Like wow I spent so much on an iPhone just to spend more on backing it up because the syncing software is failing, amazing. If anyone knows of how to make a complaint to Apple customer service (this 'expert' promptly decided to end the conversation midway when I pointed out he/she's not really helping) please let me know.

I suppose I'll throw a post in here, too, since I'm dealing with the same issue. I had the brilliant idea to delete all my apps from iTunes since I don't use most of them anymore and then simply transfer the ones I do use over from iphone and ipad. Unfortunately, that's apparently not possible. I just want the computer to have copies of all the apps on the phone and ipad. I don't really care if I can't directly transfer them because of the "app thinning" described above.

Just an option to "download copies of apps on this device from the store?" or something would be really useful and seems like a reasonable feature.

Guys, I found a solution:

1. Open “iTunes” and go to the “iTunes Store”.

2. Select “App Store” at the top of the screen.

3. Search or navigate to one of the apps you already purchased and click “Buy“.

4. Click “Yes” on the “You already purchased this item…”message.

5. Click “File“ > “Transfer Purchases…”.

6. Login, and all of your apps should now download to the iPhone just fine.
