Q: iOS 9 updated apps won't copy to iTunes

After updating an iPhone 6 to iOS 9.0, when doing an automatic sync or manual backup to iTunes 12.3.0.44, any apps that have been updated on the iPhone do not get copied (backed up) to iTunes anymore.  If the app has been updated on iTunes but not the iPhone, then iTunes will correctly update the iPhone -- just not the other way around.

Similarly, using iTunes File -> Devices -> Transfer Purchases no longer works with any device that's been updated to iOS 9.0.

    Guys, I found a solution:

    1. Open “iTunes” and go to the “iTunes Store”.

    2. Select “App Store” at the top of the screen.

    3. Search or navigate to one of the apps you already purchased and click “Buy“.

    4. Click “Yes” on the “You already purchased this item…”message.

    5. Click “File“ > “Transfer Purchases…”.

    6. Login, and all of your apps should now download to the iPhone just fine.

Apps in iTunes will transfer to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or iPad Pro.  What we were hoping for was to be able to transfer from device back to iTunes.

I've got used to just downloading to iTunes on my PC and transferring to my devices.  It's probably only a problem for people like myself who don't want to download the same app several times as I have more than one device, plus I keep a back up of all my iTunes content so do want the apps on computer.  At one time my broadband was limited so when I had phone data I would download the apps to the phone and transfer to PC (iTunes) to enable me to then update my other devices, although now on unlimited broadband, I still prefer to just do the download once.  Also I was experiencing dreadful slowness of apps downloading on my computer and being able to download on a device and transfer to computer and then to other devices would have been great (it was taking sometimes 20 minutes to download even a very small app to computer).

I believe Apple are not going to revert to being able to transfer app purchases back to computer.

Unless Apple change things in the next OS release there won't be a solution.  They no longer want apps to synch from device to computer so the function has been removed.

You can, however, synch from computer to device.

Other purchases such as books, music and films will transfer over usually automatically when synched to computer, although sometimes you need to prompt a transfer purchase synch.
